I grew up in Saint Brieuc, a town on the northern coast of Bretagne. A bridge with a tall arch rose eight hundred foot above a deep valley that led to the sea. As a boy, I used to climb into its dark arch and go as if suspended from one side of the valley to the other. My mother spoke of this bridge as if it was as famous as the Eiffel tower. It was but a local landmark but its image marked my childhood and my memory of her.
